Agritourism or farming heritage is truly our strength in Johnston County as it defines many of the visitor experiences available in the county. For over 25 years, farmers in the Kenly area have been sharing with visitors what it means to be a farmer through on-farm tours, museum exhibits, educational programs and the restored farmstead at the Tobacco Farm Life Museum. Today, agritourism has expanded to include on-farm entertainment with corn mazes, school education tours, hayrides and pick-your-own produce. Visit us soon to get the real farm experience in Johnston County.
Arts and Entertainment
Johnston County has truly taken advantage of converting historic school buildings into auditorium space for the performing arts. Both in Clayton and Benson, school auditoriums offer theatre productions, live music, plays and much more in very intimate surroundings. More visual arts can be found around the county like the Frank Creech Art Gallery at the Johnston Community College, which is also home to the Paul A. Johnston Auditorium, a 1,000 seat facility. Check out the many artful opportunities on your next visit to Johnston County!
Beer, Wine and Shine Trail
Johnston County has quite the history of producing illegal spirits...but today's growing industry for wineries, breweries and distilleries is booming and legal! Visitors can tour local vineyards, find out more about making craft beers and discover the legacy of local moonshiners, Percy Flowers and the Norris Family in Broadslab. We have pulled together our resources and developed a Beer, Wine and Shine Trail...click here for a brochure.
We invite you to play golf along the way to Myrtle Beach or Pinehurst...you know you want to get in a round or two before you get there. Johnston County has six public courses along I-95 and I-40 with affordable green fees and our climate is golf friendly almost all year round. See you on the greens!
Museum and Heritage Sites
Johnston County has several museums that honor our heritage, from the last major battle of the American Civil War, Bentonville Battlefield State Historic Site to one of the most unique museums in the country dedicated to a local farm girl that was discovered by Hollywood -- Ava Gardner. Find out more through exhibits and special events for some educational fun for the whole family!
