Just one year before the end of the American Civil War, fighting remained heavy in North Carolina as the Union continued to cut supply lines to Confederate troops.  The largest land battle fought on NC soil was in the farming community of Bentonville, just 15 miles southeast of Smithfield.  Each year, the Bentonville Battlefield State Historic Site holds an anniversary program on the weekend closest to the dates of the battle, fought March 19-21, 1865.

This year's event will take place on March 15th, 10am-4pm, and all activities are FREE to the public.  The program topics this year are:

Bentonville’s 149th Anniversary program will bring the realities of war home to North Carolina. The Civil War is not going well for the Confederacy. The draft has been called out, again. Costumed living historians will portray raw conscripts being trained for war. Artillery and civilian demonstrations will also be on display. Visitors will also be given a chance to learn the period manual of arms that was used by the common infantry soldier.
