The Battle of Bentonville, March 19-21, 1865 was the largest Civil War land battle to take place on North Carolina soil with over 80,000 Union and Confederate soldiers. Tour the nearby Harper House, which served as a makeshift hospital, four driving pull-offs, a Confederate cemetery and union earthwork trails. The museum displays and interprets many artifacts from the three day battle.
Bentonville Battlefield State Historic Site is part of the NC Civil War Trails, Carolina Campaign system with over nine markers documenting the battle. Also of note, the next large re-enactment battle event will take place in March, 2010.
Free admission, visitor center, bookstore, picnic area with public restrooms. Free car and RV parking. Hours: Monday-Saturday, 9am-5pm, Closed Sunday.
